Gas furnace problem?

The Service call you might not need.

My name is Ed Cline and I want very much to be the trusted service provider for your heating and air conditioning service or repair needs. What I do not want is to take your families money for something you could have easily done yourself. These service procedures are for the handy homeowner who would rather be sure they really need a repairman. Before you pay for a house call, here are some things to check, before you schedule service.

I will not get you in trouble here, this is for you homeowner, not the service tech.

Any Split system Forced air Furnace, Nothing happens, No Heat

First, we want to make sure the furnace has power to it. Since almost all the heating units in Raleigh now have air conditioning added on, they all have a thermostat fan switch. Its the one marked FAN AUTO ON. Turn the fan on.

Did the fan come on? You can feel the air moving through the return grill or a handy supply register.

If the fan came on you have just checked the breaker, the furnace door switch or the blower door switch, and the fan motor.

If the furnace fan did not start you need to check the breaker first. If it is wiggly, or not lined up with the other single breakers reset it. flip it all the way  off, all the way on.

Next most likely problem is the blower door switch. This is a reverse acting refrigerator door switch. It is supposed to turn off the power to the furnace when the blower door is removed for any reason, or just because they vibrate loose sometimes, or the furnace door clip is broken, the door is warped, the door wasn't put on correctly last time it was removed.

To check it remove the furnace blower door and push it in. Did the fan start yet? If yes then put the door on right and you're done.

If you find this switch taped shut, or replaced with a wire nut connector its okay. This is a usual "upgrade" in Raleigh because most equipment does not require blower door removal to replace the filter.

Less likely, but often enough to mention to homeowners and servicemen alike is the furnace switch. The light switch that is required to be in sight of the furnace. Look around, its probably above you or maybe behind you. This switch in Raleigh is usually a regular 15 amp light switch and really should be a heavier switch. 20 amps at least for the motor start load. Turn the furnace switch off/on and wiggle it to  see if you have a loose connection. If anything starts happening you need a new switch. Additionally, moving things in an attic can leave this switch off instead of the light (duh!) or inspection or a realtor. I don't want to charge you the best part of a hundred dollars to turn on a switch for you, you might never call me again.

Everyone thinks its the thermostat. Okay, maybe, but first.

Homeowner installed stats are a big offender here, however wires loosen, and battery changes leave plugs loose if not snapped into place properly. I can't possibly address every kind of thermostat (i could, but whew!) so lets look at common types.

If your thermostat has a dial or lever to control the temperature of your home you have a mercury bulb bimetal thermostat. If you remove the cover by just pulling it loose straight away from the wall, you will see the mercury bulb or a set of contacts that are mechanical. This thermostat was and is the most reliable type. Unfortunately it is no longer manufactured.

Turn it up slowly and down slowly. You can see a tiny little spark inside the glass that says "I have just asked the furnace to come on". This is all the heating control can do. If you see this little spark you probably have a working thermostat.

If you have a digital thermostat control you can check the Fan switch the same as with a mercury stat, but for the assurance that it is calling for heat you will need to listen carefully for a quiet click, which is the micro relay doing the same job of calling for heat that the mercury bulb used to do. The indication is not visual and may not happen immediately, so be patient.

Also, on these digital thermostats a built in time delay may prevent immediate response to your heating request and instead give you a flashing indicator, or a flashing "wait", or a little flame flashing. This is a good thing, and if the indicator goes steady after 5 minutes of waiting, then again you probably don't have a thermostat problem.

What you should not do is assume that if the furnace won't heat, its a bad thermostat. This is a very common assumption based on the calls I receive, and may cause you to replace a perfectly good heating control without repairing the no heat problem.

If any of the heating controls I just went over are acting up intermittently  then there is one more procedure you can use if you feel confident in your ability. Remove the cover, or the thermostat from the wall and after you change any batteries you find in there, you can tighten the screws holding the control wires to the sub base or thermostat. Loosen the wire terminals a quarter of a turn ( lefty loosie ) and then snug them back down.

When you remove the thermostat and then re install it you will be cleaning all its connections and any oil or corrosion on its contacts. Now retest, as above.

Electrical problems make up 80% of of regular heating or air conditioning service requests. Many are complex issues and challenging for any serviceman, however these are simple, common heating issues that you can address without being a furnace mechanic.
